Collision with spectator after end of Algarve stage five

Spaniard from Movistar Team suffers fractures in sixth cervical vertebra and left arm's ulna, after crashing while heading back to team bus following last stage in Volta ao Algarve

The 2016 Volta ao Algarve, which saw Ion Izagirre taking 2nd place in the final overall classification, left a bitter taste to the Movistar Team just after it ended on Sunday. Following the finish atop the Alto do Malhao on stage five, Jonathan Castroviejo, one of the telephone squad's riders on Portuguese soil, suffered a bad crash while riding from the finish line to the team bus, parked on the foot of the ascent. A spectator suddenly got in his way and made him collide and fall down.

Immediately moved to the Hospital de Faro with acute pain in his neck and left arm, medical checkups confirmed a fracture to his sixth cervical vertebra and ulna. The Basque rider remains at the medical center, awaiting for new reports and a decision on the way he'll be transferred back to his home in Spain.
