Movistar Team completes double treble in Spanish Championships

Women's road race

Eider Merino (gold), Gloria Rodríguez (silver) and Mavi García (bronze) round off spectacular 36 hours for Blues, as Alba Teruel comes close to double in under-23 competition.

Movistar Team again showed unbreakable strength at the main race of the 2018 Women’s Spanish Championships, held on Saturday over 115 km from Oropesa del Mar to Culla with more than 2,000 meters of elevation gain. Eider Merino and Gloria Rodríguez completed a magnificent breakaway, started almost at the bang, to cross the finish together and crown a one-two-three alongside Mavi García (bronze).

Eider and Gloria, first joined by Sandra Alonso (BDM), ammassed a six-minute gap over a pursuit group where García, González (5th), Llamas (6th), Teruel (8th) and Oyarbide controlled all moves from their rivals and created a further selection with Mavi and Alicia.

Merino’s victory, her second this year after the Spanish Series’ round in Balmaseda and the 11th success for the Movistar Team in 2018, was close to be more than perfect as Teruel took silver in the under-23 race, a short field’s sprint being won by Cristina Martínez (BDM). The second place won’t, though, overshadow the splendid attitude and team spirit shown by the entire squad directed by Jorge Sanz.
