Six stage wins, four overall podiums, two team prizes and wins at KOM and Under-26 rankings enlighten Blues' palmarès with Telefónica at 'Grande Boucle', looking forward to win the race outright this season.
For the eighth consecutive year since Telefónica joined as title sponsor, the Movistar Team will be lining up in a Tour de France which has offered the Blues many joyous moments, as well as some setbacks, since 2011.
The Eusebio Unzué-managed squad, whose eight riders for the 2018 race were confirmed last Monday, aspires to the top step of the podium in the ‘Grande Boucle’, where they have got already four times to the final podium: three with Nairo Quintana (2013, 2015, 2016) and once with Alejandro Valverde three years ago.
The Blue outfit (6 stages won in the last seven years) will also attempt to win a stage in the Tour again. The first three years under Telefónica’s sponsorship saw them chaining victories -2011 with Costa (Super-Besse), 2012 with Valverde (Peyragudes), 2013 with Quintana and Rui (Semnoz, Le Grand-Bornand, Gap)-, yet only one of the last four seasons had the Spanish squad notching up a success -Ion Izagirre (2016), at Morzine-.
Valverde’s crash in Düsseldorf and the enormous wear and tear sustained by Quintana prevented the Movistar Team from getting good results in 2017. The Blues, however, have good history as a group in a race, having claimed the team prize twice in Paris (2015 and 2016), while also leading Quintana out to KOM and Young Riders’ jersey wins in 2013, the Colombian back to white in 2015.
