12 July 2018

Giro Rosa (st. 7)

García (16th), Merino (18th) half a minute behind top-ten at Giro's crucial mountain time trial; Annemiek Van Vleuten (MTS) takes astonishing win and Maglia Rosa.

Dutchwoman Annemiek Van Vleuten (MTS) made an absolute exhibition during Thursday’s mountain TT in the 2018 Giro Rosa, a 15km course with 1,000 meters of vertical gain towards the dam of Alpe Gera di Campo Moro. The World Champion put 2’28” on Ashleigh Moolman (CBT, 2nd) and 2’54” to Lucinda Brand (SUN, 3rd), taking over the Maglia Rosa as the Movistar Team riders maintained their strong level from the eve’s finish in Gerola Alta.

Three riders from the Jorge Sanz-led squad finished within the day’s top-25: Mavi García (16th), just 23″ off the top ten; Eider Merino (18th), 14″ behind her team-mate; and Lorena Llamas, 24th after great work for the two on Wednesday. The Telefónica-backed squad thus keeps its main two GC references near the best ten overall -Eider and Mavi are 13th and 14th, over a minute behind 10th place-, the Blues still second in the team GC -behind Sunweb- of a race that will cover its eighth stage in Breganze on Friday (121km + a Cat-3 climb nine kilometers from the end).
