Blues brilliantly aggressive in Vårgårda road race

Telefónica-backed squad most courageous in Swedish event

Jasinska (15th), Mavi García lead Movistar Team's festival of attacks in Sweden, as swift Marianne Vos (WAD) prevails in twisty finish.

Former multiple World champion Marianne Vos (WAD) profited from her bike handling skills in the final turns of the decisive circuit to leave the bunch behind and win the 2018 PostNord Vårgårda (UCI Women’s WorldTour, 141km) road race for the third time in her career. The Swedish race witnessed a festival of attacks by the Movistar Team, undoubtedly the most aggressive squad of the race.

From the very first to the last move, the ladies directed by Jorge Sanz sought for the front of the race restlessly. An early move by Mavi García after the first of four gravel sectinos in the race -chased by big names, such as Vos, Anna Van der Breggen (DLT) or Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig (CBT)- was seconded by a flurry of subsequent attacks, with big protagonism from Lourdes Oyarbide and Rachel Neylan.

Back to the final, shorter loop, García –briefly caught off the back– and Aude Biannic again tried to break a peloton where Alicia González and Malgorzata Jasinska stayed strong against the fast pace in the climbs to Hägrungabacken, following a dangerous solo move by Van der Breggen. Despite insistent attempts by the Jorge Sanz-led squad to go clear, the inevitable sprint finish saw the Blues taking 15th place with ‘Jasi’, inside a main field containing four of the Blues.

The Movistar Team, 9th at Saturday’s wet team time trial, puts end to a duo of races full of good learning, courage and adaptation to various race circumstances. To build up and continune improving, the Blue squad will head north to start in the Ladies Tour of Norway, Thursday through Sunday.
