A performance for the history books. A brutal attack into the main climb of the day, Lofthouse, 105km from the finish in Harrogate, rewarded Annemiek van Vleuten (NED / MTS) with her first World Road Race Championship after 149km of demanding roads – under a sun which will surely differ much from the rain forecast for Sunday’s men’s event.
The Dutchwoman spectacularly held off a tough pursuit by eight riders -including silver and bronze medalists Anna Van der Breggen (NED / DLT) and Amanda Spratt (AUS / MTS)-, after which finished a main peloton with most Movistar Team riders on course.
Paula Patiño, 20th inside the group 5’20” behind the winner, was – just aged 22 – the top Blue finisher, midway through a bunch also including Mavi García (25th), Eider Merino (35th) and Aude Biannic (36th). Jasinska (64th) and Oyarbide (74th) also completed the race.
