Second round of the UCI Women's WorldTour

Serbian youngster from Movistar Team resists, sprints into pursuit group behind winner Longo Borghini (TFS), who left everyone behind with 25km attack. Thomas (18th), Aalerud also at main group.

The women’s Movistar Team’s streak of top-ten results in 2021 came to an end after seven races, with the Trofeo Binda (UCI Women’s WorldTour) seeing Jelena Erić taking the Blues’ best result in 11th place behind a dominant, solo winner Elisa Longo Borghini (TFS).

The squad directed on Italian soil by Jorge Sanz got themselves with Aalerud and Patiño into the early attacks of a circuit only seeing the peloton split into the last two laps. A strong, decisive attack from Longo Borghini left behind the local hero a five-woman pursuit group, followed by a bigger peloton where Leah Thomas kept the top places until the end.

With no chance for a podium result, Erić did fight -fifth from her group- into a sprint which again showed the Serbian’s consistency -she was 8th at Oetingen last Sunday-, able to perform well at very different scenarios. The Movistar Team will now focus its efforts on the Flemish classics, en route to ‘De Ronde’, starting with Thursday’s Brugge – De Panne.
