Dutchman triummphs from early break to beat the sprinters as Marc (19th over the line) gets safely through before mid-mountain finish in Sestola, Tuesday.
The break took the win against all odds on day three of the 2021 Giro in Canale, as Taco van der Hoorn (IWG), one of its eight members, shut the door to a peloton which fought until the very finish line to enable what otherwise seemed like an inevitable sprint.
The Dutchman, who covered the last 15km solo, raised his arms victorious by a short margin against the main group, where Marc Soler (Movistar Team) again showed extreme attention to finish without any setbacks, in 19th place.
The Telefónica-backed squad completed the day’s job orderly. Albert Torres covered the Blues from early on; Oliveira, Cataldo and Jorgenson positioned the Spanish outfit’s ‘train’ at the front into the final series of little climbs; and Villella completed the job of supporting Marc.
Nelson remains the top Movistar Team rider in the GC, just off the top-ten (11th). The standings should change considerably, though, at Tuesday’s first mid-mountain finish in Sestola, following the ascent of Colle Passerino (Cat-2), crested just 2km from the end.
