Movistar Team adds 15,000km in 2023 to WWF Spain’s Earth Hour challenge
17 March 2023

Held next Saturday, March 25th

Blues join Telefónica to support initiative for second year on a row; hopes to raise awareness towards current climate emergency.

The Movistar Team, one of the most renowned cycling teams on the planet, is joining the #KMPorElPlaneta initiative from WWF Spain, and aims to add, from today and until March 25th, another 15,000km to their counter. Thanks to that impulse, the campaign is reaching almost 90,000 kilometers. The Movistar Team has already registered its effort at the campaign’s website, and invites the cycling community and its fans to do the same and join some of their top riders -such as Iván García Cortina, Arlenis Sierra, Fernando Gaviria or Carlos Verona- in this challenge. This year, to commemorate Earth Hour 2023, WWF Spain invites people to join a challenge to foster the practice of sports and its values, which the organisation aims at linking with their efforts to win ‘a time trial against the climate emergency and nature destruction’, in a critical year for the future of our planet.

The #KMPorElPlaneta initiative from WWF Spain is now supported by the Telefónica-backed squad, which features prestigious names of our sport, such as Enric Mas or Annemiek van Vleuten. The challenge presented by WWF is perfectly aligned with the Movistar Team’s sustainability policies. The Blues were the first cycling squad recognised with the Spanish Ministry for Ecological Transition’s Seal, producing already more than 50% of their headquarters’ energy with solar panels, with support from the Union Cycliste Internationale. This action is part of a set of measures devoted to reducing their carbon footprint, estimated in 2020 as 175,000kg of equivalent CO2 every year.

This year, Earth Hour invites all people, organisations and sports clubs to join their challenge and add their steps / kilometers through March 25th to reach together a full lap of Earth.

The counter is already way past that, up to 90,000km, thanks to the impulse from the Movistar Team, which has pledged to cover 15,000 kilometers from today through March 25th. However, the Telefónica-backed squad’s support can be further increased over the next few days, as the Movistar Team fans can add new kilometers to the ones from the Blues by choosing the team at the campaign’s website.

The inscription can be done at horadelplaneta.es, where everybody who wishes to join can choose the distance they want to cover walking, running, riding their bikes, swimming or skating. As they complete their inscription, they will receive a downloadable backnumber with their name and the kilometers pledged. The organisers invite those participating to share pictures on social media with their commitment towards the #HoraDelPlaneta | #KMPorElPlaneta.
