On Telefónica and its presence in Madrid
The Telefónica company was established in 1924, and already in those twenties, in 1929, the 28, Gran Vía building opened its doors. Part of the urban scheme and symbol of Madrid’s architecture, the 90-meter-tall building was the highest in Europe when opened, and remained as the tallest in the city for a quarter of a century, an architectural treasure which brought about a revolutionary change: for the first time in Spain, a metallic structure was used, and a pioneer method was integrated with a forged-iron internal structure.
Several decades later, in the 2000s, Telefónica moved its headquarters to Distrito C, a 168,000-square-meter complex with 15 buildings, glass facades and extensive green areas, which was later called Distrito Telefónica.
Inaugurated in 2008, it was at the time the biggest solar park of Europe and one of the most significant around the world, with 16,000 photovoltaic solar panels, which produce a tenth of the complex’s total energy consumption.
A big step towards Telefónica’s modernisation, which Telefónica was able to imagine 100 years ago and the Movistar Team will proudly sport during La Vuelta.
