Time schedules for the European cycling follower will again be extreme, yet in the opposite way from the Tour Down Under's as five of the seven days will be finishing just before midnight, at 11.30pm Euro time (7.30pm in Argentina). The only stages which do change that pattern are day four (Wednesday 24th), scheduled to end around 7.30pm Euro (15.30h ARG), and day five atop Colorado (Friday 26th), around 5.30pm Euro (13.30h ARG).

Score

Analysis

The Movistar Team is back in Argentina after a year’s absence as they lineup for the 36th edition of the Vuelta a San Juan (UCI 2.1), following six consecutive appearances at the neighbouring San Luis province for the Tour Internacional, now extinct. More westbound and closer to the Andes, San Juan nevertheless offers flatter routes, which better suit some of the world’s biggest names as they get prepared for racing in Europe.

Despite that initial description, though, four stages will be defying the predictable sprint finishes. Day two (Monday 22th) will see riders climbing the Alto Punta Negra (1.3km at 8%) four times, the last one just 2km from the finish in Peri Lago. Stage three (Tuesday 23rd) will be a 14km ITT in the province’s capital. Day four (Wednesday 24th) will feature two Cat-1 ascents before the finish in San Agustín. And the stage five showdown (Friday 25th) till take the peloton to the top of the Alto Colorado (Cat-1), almost 2,600m above sea level.
