Analysis

The Movistar Team lines up for a third consecutive year at the Vuelta a San Juan, an Argentinian event which has slowly but steadily made a solid name for itself as one of the most common places for the big names in the peloton to start their competitive schedule.

The 2020 route compresses its number of key stages from four to three, as the first hilltop finish from previous editions, the ascent to the Punta Negra dam, will be part of the individual time trial of the race. The new 15.2km route (Tuesday 28th January; stage 6, 15.2km) now features a flat start followed by a steep 1.2km ascent at around 9% and a gentler finish.

The two other crucial stages of this race, otherwise suited for the sprinters -yet always dangerous with the wind and the risk of crashes into a very heterogenous peloton-, are the ones on Wednesday 29th (st. 4), overcoming the climbs of the Ischigualasto Park halfway through the course, and most importantly Friday 31st (st. 5), with the traditional climb of the Alto Colorado, a not-so-steep ascent -its last 14km have a 4.6% average gradient- whose summit is nevertheless set at 2,600 meters above sea level.
