Analysis

The men’s Movistar Team will tackle its final stagerace of 2021 with the Giro di Sicilia, a new feature in the calendar and a source of good news before its start, with Alejandro Valverde making his return following the tough crash he sustained at La Vuelta. ‘El Bala’ and his team-mates will be competing on hilly roads over the four days of racing in southern Italy, routes suited to their climbing abilities, before heading to the north of the country for the last week of the season.

Two days for the sprinters, with finishes in Licata (Tuesday 28th) and Mondello / Palermo (Wednesday 29th), will preceed the crucial stage three on Thursday 30th, with the final climb to Caronia (3.5km at 5.7%). The final stage, Friday 1st October, will be the most mountainous, over the ‘GPM’ of Portella Mandrazzi (1,125m above sea level) and especially Sciarra di Scorciavacca (9.5km at 6.5%) towards Mascali.
