Switching from a sprinter’s race to a traditional multi-day event and back; in October (due to the pandemic) or its traditional June slot; with or without an ITT… The Women’s Tour, an otherwise excellent event, seems to be still looking for its quintessential character as it reaches its 8th edition, one that will open the Movistar Team’s final month before the Grand Tour challenge in July. As their leads focus on preparations for the Giro Donne and Le Tour Femmes, this race opens room for other riders to shine.
With most stages suited to the sprinters -five out of the six could be good for them- and the race initially focused on bonus seconds, breakaways… the most challenging courses will be tackled on the two Welsh stages, on Thursday 9th -a long 144km journey, with endless slopes, between Wrexham and Welshpool- and most importantly Friday 10th. The Queen, absolutely decisive stage will be covered on day five, climbing the Black Mountain (5.5km at 5.6%) to define the GC podium places.
