Analysis

It’s the last WorldTour event in Spain before La Vuelta, and the Movistar Team has its sights set on this event ever since it was first raced in 1981. The Eusebio Unzué-led squad will be back at the Clásica de San Sebastián for its 38th edition in 2018, the Gipuzkoa event offering a beautiful course whose success in previous seasons has been cemented on the change introduced in its final section in 2014, climbing towards the Igeldo mountain.

The hill, one of three distinct, little peaks surrounding the city also known as Donostia, was first crested through the Bordako Tontorra road, then replaced by the slope of Murgil Tontorra. The 1.8km, 11,5% average ascent, finished with just 7km to go, will decide a race with no less than eight categorized climbs.

After Meaga (Cat-3), Iturburu (Cat-2) and Alkiza (Cat-3), the race will start splitting up into a double circuit around Jaizkibel (Cat-1, 7.5km at 6%) and Arkale (Cat-3; 3.2km at 5.5%). The passage through the finish in the famous Boulevard, 16km from the end, will mark the start of the Murgil circuit, whose final descent will take the riders back to the city, along the famous beaches of Ondarreta and Zurriola.
