Analysis

The UCI women’s calendar has a new stop in Belgium on Wednesday 20th March, with a race whose men’s edition has long been a demanding ‘intermezzo’ between the two main blocks of Flemish cobbled classics.

As in the men’s race, the Nokereberg -a 300m ascent on cobblestones inside a village near to Waregem, home of Dwars door Vlaanderen- will be the finish and main point of attention in the race, ending with five laps around the city which gives name to the race (Koerse is Dutch for ‘race’).

Other than the six cobbled segments in the 24km point-to-point section from the start in Deinze and an early loop before the final circuit -a total 50km before the last loop, 121km in total-, there will be another ‘secteur pavé’ in each final lap: Herlegemstraat, 500m located eight kilometers from each passage through the line, which will preceed a series of small climbs which will take its toll at the end.
