Analysis

It’s never late to re-discover one of the most beautiful classics in the WorldTour schedule. As it celebrates its 40th season in racing, the Movistar Team will be racing with both of its squads for the first time at the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, the traditional opening race of the Flemish calendar and an event with an unmistakable, sweet taste of the authentic, legendary atmosphere in Belgium. Its 200km also contain a legendary finish, with the Kapelmuur, the Bosberg and the arrival to Ninove, which imitate what was, until not far ago – the race now heading to Oudenaarde and deciding its outcome at the Kwaremont / Paterberg circuit – the finish of the Ronde van Vlaanderen.

To reach that final straight line, the Blues -captained by Jürgen Roelandts- will have to get over 13 hills and up to twelve cobbled sections. Most of the race’s difficulties are squashed into the last 55km, as the riders tackle the Wolvenberg (145km) and immediately follow with the pavé of the Ruiterstraat, the Kerkgate (149km) and Jagerij (151km) plus the Molenberg -another ascent on cobblestones- (158km).

Following that climb and the characteristic Haaghoek sector (162km), there will be a 20km stretch with ‘only’ three hills on conventional roads (Leberg, Berendries and Elverenberg) before the Muur (183km), the Bosberg (187km) and the suffering in the run-in to the finish.
