The Tour de l’Ardèche is one of those races which brings back the old taste of women’s cycling to those who have been following this side of the sport for long enough. It’s run by a very modest organisation, completely made of volunteers; small squads face some of the strongest teams in the WorldTour; and routes are varied and really tough, with some of the most demanding climbs in the calendar.
The four days not to lose sight of when it comes to GC contention are stage two to Beauchastel (Thursday 9th), with five climbs that include Cornas (Cat-2) and Rotisson (Cat-2) right before the end; the mountain-top finish of Mont Lozère (Cat-1), preceded by the Sommet du Goulet (Cat-1), on Saturday 11th; stage five (Sunday 12th) in St-Jean-en-Royans, with Gaudissard (Cat-1) right from the band plus Rochechinard (Cat-3) next to the end, and the mountain showdown to Privas (Tuesday 14th), climbing Fontenelle (Cat-1) and Benas (Cat-1) in a short route of only 81km.
