Analysis

The plate spinning game of the final stretch (or so we hope) of this pandemic has forced the Amstel Gold Race, which wasn’t held in 2020 -it had a date reserved for October, yet was still cancelled-, to be held into a circuit closed to the public in 2021, quite similar to the one at the 2012 Worlds in Valkenburg, which the Women’s WorldTour peloton will cover from very early in the morning, for both men’s and women’s events to take place in the same day.

Seven laps and 21 hills are the menu on this 116km course which will feature the Geulhemmerberg, the Bemelerberg and, most importantly, the Cauberg, with its tough slopes to be covered less than two kilometers from the finish at Berg en Terblijt. A race of attrition, with some difficult descents, like the one towards Valkenburg, where focus and position are key.
