Analysis

It had always been the main rehearsal for the riders aiming for Le Tour – and it will be the final rehearsal this time, too. In just five days -three less than usual-, the Critérium du Dauphiné accumulates nearly 19,000 meters of elevation gain over demanding, restless Alpine courses, just two weeks before the start of the ‘Grande Boucle’ in Nice. Add to that most of the GC contenders for the French grandtour and you’ve got a race you don’t want to miss.

To open the race (Wednesday 12th), the peloton will tackle a 218km route with seven rated ascents towards Saint-Christo-en-Jarez, including the Col du Béal (Cat-2) near the start plus four climbs in the last 60 kilometers. Thursday 13th, the Col de Porte (HC), with 18km at 6.2% and a final section with several kilometers exceeding 10%, will be the first big finish of the race. A day later (Friday 14th), La Madeleine (HC) will be already a big obstacle before another tough finishing climb to Saint-Martin-de-Belleville (Cat-1), 15km at 6%.

The weekend will bring a brutal duo of decisive stages, with seven climbs on Saturday 15th -Bisanne (HC) preceeding the finish at Megève’s altiport (Cat-2)- and no less than eight on Sunday 16th, including Romme (Especial), Colombière (Cat-1) or Aravis (Cat-2).
