Trofeo Ayuntamiento de Estella
Colombian youngster from Movistar Team reinforces under-23 lead in Copa de España -ending next month in Burgos- after joining decisive move of Navarra race.
It was a one-two finish for Bizkaia-Durango at the 2nd Trofeo Ayuntamiento de Estella, penultimate round of the 2019 Spanish Racing Series, as they took Enara López (1st) and Sandra Alonso (2nd) into the right move late into a warm, fast 106km race in Navarra, with two final climbs to Irache (2.8km, 4.5% avg).
The Movistar Team, heading into this home race with a smaller lineup -Sheyla Gutiérrez, Alba Teruel and Paula Patiño-, did not miss any of the main breaks. Alba Teruel was part of an early, 11-woman move, while Patiño (3rd) joined the definitive selection of four, alongside Laizane (EIC) and the two other podium finishers. López anticipated the sprint between them with a well-timed attack, as Sheyla Gutiérrez came home in 7th, third from a peloton arriving twelve seconds after the break.
It’s the fourth podium finish in Spain this 2019 season for Patiño, already 2nd and 3rd at the Spanish Series rounds of Eibar and Noja, and also 2nd six days ago at the Trofeo Gobierno de La Rioja. Paula leads the U23 Copa de España, which will end, just like the elite competition, with the GP Muniadona in Villasana de Mena (Burgos), Saturday 20th July. The Colombian now sits also six points (199 vs. 193) behind the overall leader, Cristina Martínez (BDU), who finished in 10th place today.
