Blues continue to offer excellent image

Kopecky (LIV) only one matching Telefónica-backed squad's fantastic teamwork, solid at all race situations on the Walloon cobblestones.

The leap in performance and confidence the Movistar Team is experiencing in the opening races of 2021 was evident again at Tuesday’s Le Samyn des Dames (UCI 1.1), second race for the Telefónica-backed squad this spring, over a tough circuit around Belgian town of Dour (92km) with four difficult ‘secteurs pavé’.

Emma Norsgaard repeated her 2nd place from last Saturday’s Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, only beaten by Belgian champion Lotte Kopecky (LIV) at a very long sprint where the Blues supported the Dane until the very finishing straight.

It was a relentless performance by the whole Pablo Lastras-led group in Wallonia was. Alicia González and Alba Teruel covered all moves together with debutant Sara Martín; Aude Biannic and Jelena Erić strung out the field with several attacks into the final lap; and Norsgaard, who had already made part of a dangerous, five-woman group including Kopecky with 30km to go, had some final support from Barbara Guarischi and Biannic to launch a sprint she was overtaken at with few meters left.

It’s thus the second podium in as many races for the Movistar Team, with excellent morale towards Saturday’s WorldTour opener, Strade Bianche, again with Annemiek van Vleuten at the start line.
