Day sorted out in Foligno for Movistar Team
17 May 2021

Giro d'Italia (st.10)

Sagan (BOH) takes the sprint ahead of Gaviria (UAD) and Cimolai (ISN). No major changes on the GC.

Hilly terrain and a flat finish stage between L’Aquila and Foligno, a 139 km course that had several short and non categorized climbs as well as a 4th category one. None of this prevented a sprint in the end because the script went as usual, with an early break of five composed by the ever-present Pellaud (ANS), Marengo (BCF), Rivi (EOK), Van der Hoorn (IWG) and Goosens (LTS).

The break never stood a chance, having only 2 minutes of advantage with the peloton at most, and were caught at 43 km to when BOH pushed to try to distance the pure sprinters on Valico della Somma (the 4th category climb). And they succeeded when Merlier (AFC), the then current ‘Maglia Ciclamino’, was dropped from the peloton along with Nizzolo (TQA).

Their work paid off and Sagan took the win and the ‘Ciclamino’ in a tricky sprint in which our guys entered with the main group with no trouble, facing a well deserved rest for tomorrow. No major changes on the GC.

Hills will come back after the rest day with a 162 km stage between Perugia and Montalcino in which the terrain will get rougher as the riders approach the finish.

– Start at 12.5 h, finish around 17.00 h; broadcasted by Eurosport 2 and GCN+ starting 12:50 h.
