Olympic champion and Movistar Team leader recognised on Wednesday by world journalists inside 'Oscars of sports' shortlist; virtual prize giving gala to be held in April.

The Movistar Team received with enormous joy on Wednesday the news that the exceptional latest season from their big leader, Annemiek van Vleuten, was recognised with a nomination to the ‘World Comeback of the Year’ at the 2022 Laureus World Sports Awards, the most important annual award ceremony in sports around the globe.

The recognition, coming after votes from over 800 sports journalists from all over the world, puts together the name of Van Vleuten, the Olympic time trial champion in Tokyo, with those from five other world-class athletes aiming at the prize: male cyclist Mark Cavendish; skater Sky Brown; multiple world MotoGP champion Marc Márquez; diver Tom Daley; and artistic gymnast Simone Biles.

The final choice on the winner is now in the hands of the 72 members of the Laureus Academy, big legends of sports which include extraordinary riders like Miguel Indurain, Fabian Cancellara or Sir Chris Hoy. The Laureus prize giving gala for 2022, held as a virtual event, is scheduled for the month of April.

Annemiek van Vleuten: “Tokyo was just one of those unbelievable, once in a lifetime moments, when sport gives you the chance to try again after something hasn’t quite worked out. To be able to get back on the bike just two days after a low moment and win a gold medal was so fulfilling. I am really thrilled that the world’s media recognized that and nominated me for this Laureus Award. Congratulations to all the other Nominees, in all the Awards categories.”
