Analysis

The last-minute suspension of the Passo Gavia climb due to landslides has severely changed the scenario in the 30th Giro Rosa, arguably the biggest goal of the season for the stagerace specialists of the UCI Women’s WorldTour. However, the Italian event is way more than that: it’s longer than any other race in the calendar (ten stages), it’s the most stressful one, and it’s got all of the most relevant names in the sport.

very demanding 18km team time trial (Friday 5th) towards Castellania, hometown of the ‘Campionissimo’ Fausto Coppi, will open the race before two rolling stages in the first weekend: the day two route around Viù (Saturday 6th), over the Colle del Lys (Cat-2) almost right from the start, and stage three towards Piedicavallo (Sunday 7th), a continuous uphill near the end with a final 5km at 5% average.

The climb to Besana in Brianza (Cat-3) will attempt to avoid the first bunch sprint in Carate (Monday 8th), in the eve of the crucial Lago di Cancano (Tuesday 9th), replacing the Gavia, and a demanding time trial, nearly 500m of climbing in just 12km, from Chiuro to Teglio (Wednesday 10th). The mountains won’t finish there by any means, since stage seven on Thursday 11th will feature three ascents to the Fra Vicentino (Cat-3), at the finish of San Giorgio di Perlena, and Saturday 13 will see the riders take on the colossal Malga Montasio (Cat-1), 12km at almost 9% gradient.
