Analysis

Down from the 2020 calendar due to the pandemic, the Amstel Gold Race is back this April… and it’s already a massive feat for it to take place, taking into account that the very few Dutch pro races going ahead have been held at circuits closed to the public. The Limburg event is not an exception, its route shortened this year to a 16.9km loop with the three climbs of its traditional, final circuit, used at the 2012 Worlds and scheduled to be covered twelve times by the men’s peloton.

The hills of Geulhemmerberg, Bemelerberg and, above all, the Cauberg, with its tough slopes crested just 1.8km from the finish at Berg en Terblijt, configure a parcours which changes for the final lap, of only 15.9km, which doesn’t feature the Cauberg. Bemelen then becomes the final slope, eight kilometers from the line, which offers faster riders a chance to survive – and turns the final pursuit into a crazier, tougher one at the very same time!
