Analysis

The 2022 Giro Donne and Tour Femmes champion is back to racing. Annemiek van Vleuten will start at the Ceratizit Challenge by La Vuelta with the final block of arguably her most successful season to date. On her road to the World Championships in Wollongong, the Olympic champion will make a stop in a Spanish race she already conquered last year, one that increases its number of stages from four to five for this edition – even if those are, except for one, really short, maybe even below what looks reasonable in the WorldTour nowadays.

A team time trial of almost 20km around Marina de Cudeyo (Wednesday 7th) will be the first main key for the overall result, which could even be defined already after stage two, the Queen of this year’s race (Thursday 8th). It’s only 106 kilometers, yet with five climbs: Fuente las Varas through two of its sides (Cat-1 / Cat-2), Cruz de Usaño (Cat-3), Campo Layal (Cat-1) and Campo la Cruz (Cat-2), the latter crested 14km from the finish in Colindres.

The race will leave Cantabria on Friday 9th, climbing Hoces de Bárcena (Cat-2) before a series of short ramps prior to the finish in Aguilar de Campoo -the second race to finish there this year, after the Vuelta a Burgos-. It will be the prelude to a marathon stage (Saturday 10th), over 160km between Palencia and Segovia, with some little climbs early on plus a challenging finish, over a gravel road with 9km to go and a cobbled slope next to the famous Aqueduct.

La Vuelta will reach Madrid again on Sunday 11th for a traditional final stage in the Spanish capital’s big avenues, 17 laps (96km) with a bunch sprint as likely scenario and the bonus sprints as main amusement.
