Analysis

It’s not the first Spanish race of the season, yet it remains an unmissable reference for cycling fans. Five trophies, one more than in previous times, are featured in the programme of the Challenge Mallorca, an event which offers chances for fastmen and climbers almost all the same.

Two of the five trophies are more suited to the sprinters: the ones finishing in Alcudia (Thursday 26th), though featuring the Coll de Sa Batalla (Cat-2) close to the finish; and Palma (Sunday 29th), with the classic finish in the city’s coastal boulevard. A more tricky, unpredictable finish on day one, a series of ups and downs towards Calvià, will again feature an uphill finish + four rated ascents -plus those which are not KOM, which are a handful!-.

More focused on the punchy climbers are the ones on the 27th and 28th, both over the Puig Major through its Sóller side. Friday, the riders will crest it with about 50km to go, later descending towards Pollença and finishing atop the Mirador d’Es Colomer. Saturday’s one will be more difficult, the summit about 30km from the end in Lloseta during the traditional Trofeo Serra de Tramuntana.

** It’s important to note, just like in every season, that lineups vary at every trophy and the full list of riders at this Guide does not represent what the Movistar Team will bring at all trophies. It’s good to always have a look at the official startlist each day at the usual places.
