Analysis

The whole alternate calendar to the 2020 Tour de France for the men’s Movistar Team will be covered in Italy, and starts with the Settimana Coppi e Bartali, whose original dates in late March have been replaced by early September – and make possible for many WorldTour teams to bring strong contenders.

Responding to that interesting field -with several teams already warming up for the Giro, which should start in Sicily on October 3rd-, the GS Emilia proposes a well-known, yet very demanding route, even harder than in previous years.

The race starts on Tuesday 1st September with a double sector, a rare feature not many professional cycling events are using nowadays. A 97.8 morning opener -with three climbs of the ‘Muro di Longiano’ (1km, 10%)– will be followed by a 13km TTT in the afternoon, both in Gatteo.

A day later (Wednesday 2nd), the riders will have to tackle a tough circuit in Sogliano al Rubicone, with four ascents of 3.6km each, at an average 6%. Thursday 3rd, the peloton will tackle a real mountain course, with the Monte Carpegna (HC), the ascent made famous by Marco Pantani, plus San Leo (Cat-1) and Fiorentino (Cat-2) close to the finish. And to wrap things up, Friday 4th, seven ascents to the Rocca delle Caminate (Cat-2; 3.2km at 7%) in Forlì.
