Analysis

“Everybody is in now!”. The Tour of Guangxi finally comes back as the last UCI WorldTour event to return after the forced stop due to the most acute phase of the covid pandemic in 2020. After three years out of the calendar, the Chinese stagerace will serve as ending point of a season, the 44th in the Movistar Team’s history, which left a really good taste during its Asian showdown last year. The goal for the Blues is to come as close as possible to those results…

Despite most stages being more suited towards a bunch sprint, three stages will feature mountainous difficulties relevant enough to be mentioned. The mountain-top finish in Mashan Nongla (stage four; Sunday 15th), just over 3km at 6%, should be deciding the GC result, yet before that, in Nanning (stage three; Saturday 14th), four climbs of a 1.4km, 12% (!!) ascent will be tackled. Also, on day five (Monday 16th), over 200km in length, two consecutive Cat-2 and Cat-1 ascents will be crested around 30km before Guilin’s finish.
