Analysis

Five mountain-top finishes! It would be hard to beat that number on an eight-day stagerace even if trying, the 2024 Critérium du Dauphiné 2024 focused – other than a crucial, potentially decisive 34km ITT to Neulise on day four (Wednesday 5th June) – on offering the best possible launchpad as one of two WorldTour stageraces before the Tour de France.

The sprinters attending the race will have their chances at Saint-Pourçain-sur-Sioule, at the inaugural stage on Sunday 2nd, and Saint-Priest, on Thursday 6th. Stage two on Monday 3rd will already feature two Cat-2 and Cat-3 ascents before the uphill finish – not the steepest one – at the Col de la Loge; a little bit more serious will be Les Estables (Cat-3), over a final 4km at 5%.

The final weekend will feature the usual flurry of ports. On Friday 7th, riders will climb the Granier (Cat-2) and finish up Le Collet d’Allevard (HC; 11km at 8%); on Saturday 8th, on Savoie roads, the menu will be Saisies (Cat-1) + Arâches (Cat-1) + La Ramaz (Cat-1) to end in Samoëns 1600 (HC; 10km at 9.3%); and on Sunday 9th, things will end with Le Salève (Cat-1) and the Plateau des Glières (Cat-1), this time through a different side not featuring its characteristic gravel section.
