Van Moer (LTS) wins from early breakaway as Mas, López and Alejandro -who got himself within the fastest riders in the sprint- finish into pursuit group 25" behind.
Young Belgian Brent Van Moer (LTS) left his breakaway companions behind and won solo on stage one of the 2021 Critérium du Dauphiné (UCI WorldTour), a hilly 182km course around Issoire with a difficult final circuit, over two Cat-3 + Cat-4 climbs.
Van Moer, the first race leader, crossed the line with 25″ over the main peloton, containing the three biggest names from the Movistar Team: Enric Mas, Miguel Ángel López and Alejandro Valverde, who even dared to give the sprinters some battle and finished in 10th place.
Arcas, Erviti, Rojas and Verona started with their great teamwork and kept the Blue leaders well protected against the wind, in the opening day of a French race which will tackle another hilly route on Monday, with La Pourcheresse (Cat-2) just 7km from the finish in Saugues, plus four other rated ascents.
