Analysis

Movistar Team opens its tour across Latin America with a second consecutive appearance at the Vuelta a San Juan, whose 37th edition will be opening its doors to some of the best WorldTour squads for the third time since it got UCI international sanctioning. The route scheduled for 2019 on Argentinian soil is basically the same as in 2018, with three mountain stages and also an ITT a bit shorter than last year’s: 12km in and around Pocito, on Tuesday 29th January.

The crucial days in San Juan, together with the time trial, will be spread out across the race. Firstly, a circuit around the Punta Negra lake –five climbs to a dam near the city, barely 1km yet at 8% average gradient, last crested with two kilometers to go-, on Monday 28th. Two days later, the way towards Valle Fértil / Villa de San Agustín, Wednesday 30th, will include a 20+km climb followed by a long downhill which already shook up the race into crosswinds in 2018. Finally, the Queen Stage on Friday 1st February: following a rare rest day, the ascent to the Alto Colorado (2565m) will take the riders through a long (19km), yet gentle (4.5%) ascent in the last battle for overall honours.
