Analysis

It’s a well-deserved promotion towards the UCI ProSeries for the Ruta del Sol, whose route for the 66th edition of the race will not leave any room for respite to the GC contenders. Two mountain stages will be combined with two hilly finishes and a decisive individual time trial -a first this season for the Movistar Team on their Canyon Speedmax machines, with both San Juan and Colombia requiring traditional bikes-, over 13km with demanding ups and downs at La Cala de Mijas (Sunday 23rd).

Wednesday 19th, riders will tackle the Puerto de Las Palomas (Cat-1) just before a descent and a tough finish up Grazalema (800m, 9%). On Thursday 20th, another finishing slope in Iznájar (1.2km, 8%) will be preceded by the Cat-3 Puerto de la Parrilla. A day later, on stage three (Friday 21st), the Alto de Baeza (Cat-2) will be crested 15km from Úbeda’s finish, with many small climbs in between. And Saturday 22nd, just before the TT, a short (125km), intense stage four will take the riders over El Purche (Cat-1), on their way to Granada.
