Analysis

The 59th edition of Tirreno-Adriatico will mark Enric Mas’ racing debut in 2024. The Movistar Team leader for three-week stageraces will start in Italy, venue for some of his finest performances, a season which will see the Artà native take first on an ITT, the classic two straights along the coast in Lido di Camaiore (10km, Monday 4th March).

Even if the biggest elevations will not loom until the weekend, the three road stages from Tuesday to Thursday will add up for no less than 626km in just three days. Tuesday’s finish in Follonica should be a mass sprint; stage three to Gualdo Tadino (Wednesday 6th) features the 5km, 4%  Casacascalda with 17k to go plus another finishing slope; and day four towards Giulianova (Thursday 7th), even if including a long climb early on, should be easier near the end.

On Friday 8th and Saturday 9th, the crucial stages will be tackled. To reach the stage five finish in Valle Castellana, the peloton will have to face the ‘GPM’ of San Giacomo -11km at 6%-  with 24km to go, plus a decisive slope of 5.5%. A day later, the Queen stage will take the riders to the top of the Monte Petrano (10km at 7.8%). At San Benedetto del Tronto, a final sprint awaits before the ‘Trident’ is handed over to the ‘King of the Two Seas’.
